SAMOA

Church life in Samoa is very important. Most villages have two to three worship services each Sunday. Their children play a big part in the worship life of each denomination. Children and young people are encouraged to have Choirs which are used in main services.

Many of the night clubs have their own bands, The Mount Vaia Band, The RSA Band, for example and the major hotels have bands of talented employees how put on a fiafia for visitors. Some of these bands have become so well known that they tour Australia and New Zealand.

They love their brass bands and the Samoan Police band has become a local icon with the marching to the Government buildings for raising of the flag in the mornings. The Police brass band has also become a popular group to entertain at the big community events like weddings and church dedications.

The main festival in Samoa is the Tuila Festival in early September, followed by the Island Jazz Festival, held in and around Apia, Samoa. The Festival aims to promote Pacific Island jazz artists and their music throughout the South Pacific region, and encourage and educate young Samoans in the art form of jazz music through workshops and clinics held by the participating artists from the Festival.
