Mexico is crammed with a multitude of opposing identities: desert landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, ancient ruins, large cities, and time-warped colonial towns.

Mexico's profusion of people and landscapes reflects the country's extraordinary history -- part Amerindian, part Spanish. One look at this country is enough to remind visitors that there is nothing new about the so called New World. This mix of modern and traditional is the key to Mexico's immense popularity as a travel destination.

Cancun
Cancun is located at the southeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. With miles of white sand beaches surrounded by the warm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean, Cancun was planned and built in the 1970’s by the Mexican government for the purpose of attracting tourists. In addition to an abundance of water sports, there are also several important Mayan sites within a 2 hour drive.

Cuernavaca
Cuernavaca is known as “The City of Eternal Spring,” Cuernavaca is blessed with a perfect climate and flowers year-round. The city is located only about 50 miles south of Mexico City. Cuernavaca is a popular weekend spot for the affluent from the capital because of the many restaurants sidewalk cafes, and theaters.

Guanajuato
For nearly 200 years beginning in 1558, Guanajuato was one of the richest silver producing cities in the world. The city possesses many subterranean passageways and narrow, winding streets that make the city truly unique. Houses line the steep slopes of a ravine that once contained a river. This extremely charming city is culturally alive and possesses an energetic, youthful personality. This is due in part to the 15,000 students attending the University of Guanajuato which is known for its art programs. During the last two weeks of October, Guanajuato hosts the Cervantes Arts Festival, attracting famous artists from around the world.

Merida
The city, built on the ruins of the Mayan city of t-ho, has been the social and economic center of the Yucatan since the conquistadors arrived. Close proximity to ruins and spectacular beaches have attracted Mexicans and foreigners to relocate to Merida. Even with a population of nearly 800,000, Merida has managed to retain its colonial charm and links to its Mayan heritage. The city’s tree-lined avenues, diverse cultural influences and relaxed lifestyle make for an ideal location to study Spanish.

Morelia
Located about 4 hours from Mexico City or Guadalajara, Morelia is a university city with about 80,000 students studying at one of the four universities. Despite its size (pop. 800,000), the city is fairly compact, with everything of interest within walking distance of the central plaza. A climate of perpetual spring makes Morelia a nice destination.

San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is a charming town with cobblestone streets, flowering gardens and plenty of colonial architecture. The city was built on a hillside with a wonderful view of the Guanajuato mountains. Many ex-patriots of the United States have settled in the area. With year round comfortable weather, San Miguel de Allende is a pleasant destination any time of year. The surrounding areas offer botanical gardens, natural hot springs and areas for hiking.

Oaxaca
The state of Oaxaca is one of the most important archaeological zones in Mesoamerica. The city boasts an abundance of colonial architecture and a strong indigenous presence. The ambiance is both relaxed and energetic. Oaxaca has one of the most active central plazas in Mexico; there is rarely a dull moment. The blend of cultures sets a tone that is both remote and cosmopolitan.
