FIJI
Fiji’s international gateway Nadi is located on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu within sight of beautiful Nadi Bay. On a coastal plain with the mountainous hills of the interior behind and surrounded by sugar cane plantations, Nadi is the hub of the bustling tourism industry in Fiji. It is approximately 25 minutes from Lautoka City, which is the “sugar capital” of Fiji and the second largest port. Nadi Town serves the ever increasing population of approximately 30,791 people who are either involved in or service the two main industries of the region, tourism and sugar production.
Fijian culture is very rich in traditional beliefs and many aspects of life today are as they were a hundred years ago. Fijians live within a strict hierarchical system with the village chiefs receiving the respect of all.
Staying in a Fijian Village is one of the most memorable experiences many groups take home. Indigenous Fijians live a communial and very sharing lifestyle within large extended families. Their houses – bures – are traditionally single room buildings with bamboo woven walls and thatch roofs. Families eat, sleep and work in these single rooms. Kitchens are separate from the main building and are simple covered structures with firewood ovens on the ground. The loo is a covered pit in the ground somewhere out the back.
